Cutting horses are highly trained to separate single cows, or groups of cows, from a herd. If a cowhand throws a loop and catches a cow or calf, the horse will "put on his brakes" and hold the rope taut. A well trained cutting horse seems to instinctively perform his job with but little guidance.
